The global power game

Samsung has stated its global vision of becoming "one of the top three electronics companies in the world in quantity and quality by 2010." Despite touching sales of $55.3 billion in 2004 – a 32% increase yoy (and despite profits of $10.5 billion – an 81% increase yoy), Samsung seems to have delivered poor results for the quarter ending September. Still, Samsung’s three divisions, namely emiconductors, telecommunication and digital media, have suffered a yoy sales fall of 3%, 5% and 16% respectively.

Getz and Santro are no longer zinging; Maruti Swift has usurped all the glory. In fact, it has led to a veritable bloodbath among auto majors. Second quarter results saw Hyundai overtaking Tata Motors to emerge as the number two automobile player in India. But the biggest problem facing B. V. R. Subbu, Hyundai President, is Maruti’s Swift. Direct sales comparisons show Swift sweeping the Indian market with a tremendous reach of 86 percent; with a miniscule 14 percent achieved by Hyundai Getz.

Garuda customers to fly Boeing

PT Garuda Indonesia, the In­donesian national flag carrier and US jet maker Boeing Co., have entered into an agree­ment to upgrade Garuda’sfleet. Under the deal, worth $2 billion, the Indonesian carrier will replace its five 737-400s, by operating 18 Boeing 737-800s by 2006, and 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners by 2013. The move is a result of large operational losses that Garuda has accumulated over the years, due to a continuing surge in global oil prices and increased competition from budget airlines…
